Learning Robot Toy

learning robot toyThere are many learning robot toys in the marketplace. The choices are endless. How does an educator choose which educational learning robot toy is best for them and their young learners?

The Best Learning Robot Toys

Below you will find the benefits and features that the KIBO robot provides, which can help when choosing which learning robot toy to choose for your PreK-2nd grade classrooms.

How is KIBO different?

Completely Screen-Free

KIBO is a screen-free programmable robot kit designed for young learners in PreK-2nd grade. Many of the other solutions available are screen-based. Because KIBO is entirely screen-free, students scan the bar codes found on the wooden programming blocks, where they create a sequence of instructions (a program). They then scan the blocks with the KIBO body to tell the robot what to do. They press the button and the robot comes alive.

This is important, as research shows that screen time for children of this age group is detrimental. The Time Magazine article, “Too Much Screen Time Can Have Lasting Consequences for Young Children’s Brain”, states: “[Research] strongly supports expert guidelines that recommend limiting screen time for young children, when the brain is rapidly developing new connections and learning from every cue it receives. “What too much screen time leads to is a variety of missed opportunities for learning and development. When a child is watching a screen, he or she is missing out on the opportunity for walking, talking and interacting with others.

Backed by 20 years of research and brought to you by an NSF Grant

KIBO is based on 20 years of research, by our co-founder and Chief Scientist, Dr. Marina Bers. At her DevTech Research Group at Tufts University, Bers and her team developed both the theoretical foundation and the robotic prototypes that became KIBO. Her research shows specific, powerful and positive learning outcomes for young learners (ages 4–7) when working with KIBO. Find more at www.kinderlabrobotics.com/research-article. See our research findings.

Since 2007, through generous funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant No. DRL-1118897, DRL-0735657), the DevTech Research Group has been researching how to create a developmentally appropriate robotics construction set for young children in Pre-K through 2nd grade. This grant paved the way to developing KIBO.

Learn the 6 Key Benefits of Using Robotics with Your Youngest Students

Learn more about the benefits of introducing coding, robotics, and engineering into early childhood classrooms. Teaching and integrating robotics and coding is easier than you may think, with hands-on, screen-free tools like KIBO. Get your FREE White Paper today!

Created and built by the child’s own imagination

KIBO lets kids can design their own learning robot toy and bring it to life – where they build and construct, code with wooden programming blocks, and decorate their robot with KIBO’s various art platforms. It is up to the child to create the character that their robot can be. Designed for open-ended play, KIBO lets your kids make almost anything – a character from a story, a carousel, a dancer, a race car, a helicopter – anything that they can think of. With KIBO, children think they are just playing, but they are learning invaluable STEAM concepts such as sequencing and coding in a fun and engaging way.

Designed with the educator in mind

KIBO is designed to be used directly with students and can be easily implemented by the educator. By incorporating KIBO in the classroom, lessons and activities are brought to life, further driving home students’ learning and retention. Our curriculum and training materials offer 160 hours of curriculum to ensure success.

The Importance of early learning coding and robotics

Young kids learn by doing and they learn best by playing with physical objects: by making things, testing things. By introducing a robot like KIBO, children engage in playful learning, thereby cultivating their curiosity for the technological world, exploring problem solving, and understanding concepts such as sequencing, cause-and-effect, programming, sensors and motors.

Introducing a coding robot for kids promotes positive, creative, and educational engagement with technology. Integrating robotics, coding, and programming into early childhood education is easier than you may think, with hands-on, screen-free tools like KIBO.
