- KIBO STEAM Book List (all recommended readings from Growing with KIBO lessons)
To help you get started right away
Our comprehensive, research-based curriculum guide, “Creating with KIBO“, offers 20-40 hours of curriculum for PreK – 2nd grade classrooms. Detailed lesson plans get teachers up and running quickly to introduce coding, robotics, and engineering concepts with KIBO. An open-ended framework for a final project invites integration with other classroom projects. The STEM curriculum is aligned with Common Core standards, the CSK12 framework and state CS standards.
Teacher Materials
KIBO Activity Center Guidebook
Create an activity center and makerspace
For teachers implementing an activity centers-based classroom, library, or makerspace, the KIBO Activity Center Guide provides 10 lessons for student-directed, discovery-based learning experiences. The guide includes suggestions for setup of a KIBO center including supplies and layout, advice for facilitating activities, and 10 complete lesson plans addressing cross-curricular connections and academic standards for early learners.
Maps, Measurement, and Make-Believe! (PDF)
Free! Floor map activities for KIBO
The “Maps, Measurement, and Make-Believe – An Introduction to Floor-Map Activities” guide offers 8 activities using floor maps to address learning standards in math, ELA/literacy, science, social studies, and design when using KIBO. Floor map activities get young kids moving and collaborating in physical space – enhancing the strengths of using KIBO in the classroom.
KIBO Activity Cards
Learn with these playful KIBO activities in any learning environment
These STEM Activity Cards provide 15 creative KIBO activities with big, colorful images and easy-to-follow instructions, for hours of student engagement or fun at home with KIBO! Each card invites young children into a different creative, imaginative activity with KIBO that combines coding, building, art, and play.
KIBO Says – Class Programming Game
Let’s have some fun with KIBO
Learn KIBO’s coding language through engaging unplugged play! Our “KIBO Says” game is a collection of oversized cards with images of KIBO’s programming icons. As your young students play “KIBO Says,” they learn KIBO’s programming language by acting out KIBO’s movements, sounds, and other commands themselves. KIBO can even scan the game cards, just like the blocks.
KIBO and Engineering Design Process Poster
Bright, colorful reminders of core concepts
These classroom posters help early educators introduce KIBO concepts with big, colorful graphics. “Meet KIBO” explains all of KIBO’s parts, while the “Engineering Design Process” reminds the student of the steps to follow in their creative construction, revision, and sharing.
Assessment Workbooks & Engineering Design Journals
The below materials are best to purchase one per student as they monitor growth and overall knowledge of KIBO.
KIBO Assessment Workbooks
Time to see what the kids know about their robot and programming
These Assessment Workbooks help teachers evaluate student learning with KIBO with a focus on programming and robotics concepts and the engineering design process. These assessments, in the form of fun story problems that children can solve with handy stickers, help teachers address student learning and outcomes. (Recommended: one workbook per student.)
Engineering Design Journals
The easy way to learn engineering design processes
Our Engineering Design Journals help early learners make their own learning visible by documenting their planning, revision, and testing. Students sketch their imagined constructions, plan their programs, and record the challenges and solutions they discover. The Engineering Design Journal guides students through the Engineering Design Process while encouraging reflection and sharing. (Recommended: one journal per student.)
Extension Set Curriculum
Ask and Imagine
Explore advanced programming ideas
With the Advanced Coding Extension Set, children can continue their exploration into even more sophisticated concepts: modularity and reusability with subroutines, complex conditional behavior, and randomness. In Ask and Imagine, students will design their own dance routines for KIBO, navigate KIBO along branching roads, and teach KIBO to play games. Ask and Imagine provides 6 – 8 hours of new KIBO activities for early educators based on the KIBO Advanced Coding Extension Set.
Showtime with KIBO!
Integrate sound performance
With the KIBO Sound Record/Playback Module, students record their own voice and KIBO plays back their recording to give their robot sound. This “Showtime with KIBO!” Guide provides a STEM curriculum where students can create bilingual translating robots; use their robots as a tour guide to show off their favorite cities; and perform a variety show incorporating song, dance, and more.
Make Learning Visible!
Enhance KIBO’s drawing creations
The KIBO Marker Extension Set enables KIBO to draw as it moves, based on the child’s programming sequence. The “Make Learning Visible!” Guide delves into engineering, mathematics, literacy, and art. Curriculum examples include programming KIBO to draw shapes and letters, create abstract artworks, and estimate distances by measuring the lines KIBO draws as it explores a cardboard town.
Build it Better!
Guide to KIBO building and design
With the KIBO Building Brick Extension Set, young students can build onto their KIBO by using the world’s most popular building bricks, including LEGO®. The “Build it Better!” Guide provides engineering and architecture ideas for students to use LEGO-compatible building bricks. Early learners can create and program robotic pets, build dream houses, and invent their own solutions to problems in favorite storybooks.
Express Yourself!
Your guide for enhanced expression
The KIBO Expression Module supports a variety of literacy activities and allows children to transform KIBO with drawings, flags, and other decorations. The “Express Yourself!” Guide provides art, literacy, and social studies ideas and activities. Students can create interactive book reports using the whiteboard, explore other countries and decorate their flags for a robotic world parade, and create interactive self-portraits.
